Here is part 3 of the “Jobs in Japan” series. There are several kinds of jobs available in Japan as a matter of fact, so the number of jobs is quite extensive.

Jobs in Japan

The following are some of the main categories:

Full-time Employment (正社員):

Full-time employees work a standard number of hours per week, typically around 40 hours. They receive benefits such as paid holidays, social insurance, and bonuses. Full-time employment offers stability and long-term career prospects.
Permanent employees need to have this status as it is often necessary especially for foreigners who want to work in Japan in the long run.The permanent employment contract is one of the formal documents that is used by the immigration bureau to prove that an employee has a stable and secure source of income to support their life in Japan.

Part-time Employment (アルバイト):

Part-time employees work fewer hours than full-time employees. They are often hired to fill temporary or seasonal positions.There are various benefits of working as a part-time employee in Japan. One of the benefits is the flexibility of getting to choose their schedules which best suits their lifestyle. This allows students and housewives to have a work-life balance and continue to pursue their hobbies or responsibilities. Furthermore, part-time employees can take up multiple jobs instead of sticking to one particular job.

Temporary Employment (派遣社員):

Temporary workers are employed by staffing agencies and are dispatched to work at client companies on a contract basis. They work for a specified period or until a specific project is completed. The benefits and job security for temporary workers may vary depending on the terms of the contract.

Contract Employment (契約社員):

Contract employees have fixed-term employment contracts with specific start and end dates. They work under a contract with an employer and may have similar benefits to full-time employees. However, their contracts may not be renewed after the expiration date.

Dispatched Employment (受取り社員):

Dispatched workers are employees of staffing agencies who are sent to work at client companies. The staffing agency is the formal employer, and the worker is assigned to various companies on a temporary basis. The worker is entitled to certain benefits, but they are generally not as comprehensive as those provided to full-time employees.

Internship(インターンシップ):

An internship is a position of a student or trainee being deployed to work in a company.
The purpose of this program is to deepen their understanding of how it is like working in a real-world and to gain new experiences. Usually, interns’ duration of work varies such as working five days for short-term and working for a year for long-term.

There are different types of internship in Japan:

Short-term internship

Mainly for students who want to work for one day to one week. It is suitable for students with hectic schedules but still wants to gain work experience during semester breaks.

Long-term internship

Mainly for students who want to work for one to six months. Offers students real working experience by involving them in projects and team meetings.
The main benefit of hiring interns is that companies can save costs instead of hiring permanent employees.

Freelance/Self-Employment (自立 社員):

Freelancers work independently and are not employed by a specific company. They provide services on a project-by-project basis, often working with multiple clients simultaneously. Freelancers are responsible for their own taxes, social insurance, and other benefits.

In order to be able to choose the best type of employment for you, it is important to keep in mind that the specifics will vary depending on your employment contract, your industry, and your company policies.
